忘记固态液态和气态吧，物质有超过五百种相态。MIT凝聚态物理学家文小刚教授（即将加盟加拿大圆周理论物理研究所）等人在《科学》上发表了一篇论文（PDF），介绍了一种新的分类系统能成功为对称性保护（symmetry-protected）物质相态分类。MIT研究人员本周还在《自然》上发布论文宣布发现了新的磁性状态quantum spin liquid(QSL)，QSL即是文小刚和同事在理论上作出预言的新相态。
凝聚态物理学是一门发现和描述多数物质相态的物理学分支，而物质相态分类通常是根据原子排列，其中的关键是对称性。例如液态即是高度对称的，而冰晶体却是缺少对称。其实，冰在许多方面还是对称的，但从高对称液态水的角度看它的对称性破缺了。通过描绘对称性和对称性在何处如何破缺而对物质进行分类的理论被称为朗道范式。
