一只乌龟同一条短吻鳄奋战15分钟后脱险。这个凶猛捕食者最终未能打开乌龟坚硬的保护壳。这只爬行动物用最高可达2900磅的力紧紧咬住乌龟，试图咬碎它的外壳，但最后没有成功，只有放弃努力。

外壳可保护乌龟免遭大多数捕食者的伤害，但鳄鱼、短吻鳄甚至美洲虎等大型动物通常情况下能击碎龟壳，吃到里面的肉。专家指出外壳的准确强度取决于乌龟身体的大小。研究人员说乌龟进化出外壳的目的是防止被捕食者吃掉。这些照片恰好展示了龟壳的作用。

虎鲨可以咬穿各种尺寸的乌龟身体。其他捕食者也能轻咬龟壳的柔软边缘，把乌龟从壳里拖出来。保护壳是由覆盖着角质盾的骨骼构成。骨质结构和肋骨、椎骨以及部分肩膀和臀部融为一体。与此同时，龟壳形状也赋予它额外强度。（孝文）
