一条失去两鳍的虎鲸竟然在鲸族的帮助下在野生环境里幸存。这条年轻虎鲸没有背鳍和右侧胸鳍，不能独自捕食。但它并没有陷入自己照顾自己或被饿死的绝境，而是得到了虎鲸群其他成员的照顾。它们和这条残疾虎鲸共享猎物。

这位摄影师捕捉到这个由7位成员组成的虎鲸群捕食一条长50英尺（约合15米）、重15公吨的布氏鲸的情景。以前的研究显示，虎鲸以捕杀更大的鲸鱼物种著称，但有时只吃猎物的舌头。

这个虎鲸群由一条背鳍弯曲的雌虎鲸、一条巨大雄虎鲸和另外4条雌虎鲸组成。这条背鳍弯曲的雌虎鲸很像影片《威鲸闯天关》中的著名虎鲸。

发现受伤或残疾虎鲸在虎鲸群帮助下存活下来的案例不多，但辛姆普在伊丽莎白港的发现就是其中之一。另外，研究人员1996年发现一只失去尾巴和部分背鳍的虎鲸幼崽，认为它们是被一艘船的螺旋桨切掉的。后来因种种原因，这条受伤的虎鲸再也没有被人看见过。
