在开源武器项目Defense Distributed公布全3D打印手枪"解放者"的CAD文件之后，澳大利亚新南威尔士州警方透露，他们下载打印和测试了两把"解放者"手枪，其中一把在测试中发生了灾难性的故障，故障有可能会重伤射击者。警方对3D打印武器的潜在危险性发出了警告，称测试显示，"解放者"射出的子弹足以杀死一个目标。他们对着肥皂射击，发现子弹能射进去17厘米之深。警方使用了一台1700美元的桌面3D打印机，材料费仅仅只花了35美元。警方说，政府需要检查监管法规，解决3D打印武器带来的问题。
