根据最新的月球岩石成分测量结果，科学家发现：月球与地球内部岩石、及碳质球粒陨石的氢同位素比值相近，这代表地月的水可能有相同的起源。科学家推测：这些水在形成月球前早已存在原始地球，并且在大撞击过程中从地球传给月球。过去的研究发现，太阳系中不同的含水天体，其水的氢同位素比值有很大的差异，比如在原始太阳星云的比值较小、在欧特云彗星的值较高，而碳质球粒陨石则和地球相近，所以，科学家将此比值做为水来源的重要指标，也据此推论地球上的水很可能与拥有太阳系原始成分的小行星脱不了关系。科学家研究了阿波罗15与17号任务中带回的月球火山玻璃标本，分析标本中包裹在橄榄石内熔滴含水的氢同位素比值。结果发现月球内部与地球内部岩石的氢同位素比值相近，表明月球与地球的水拥有相同的来源。
