精神病人并不缺乏同情心，只是他们能根据需要开启。根据发表在《Brain》上的一篇论文， 研究人员用大脑扫描仪扫描正在观看一个人伤害另一个视频的精神病犯罪分子，同时询问是否同情被伤害者。只有当他们被要求想象被伤害者的痛苦时，精神病人关于痛苦的区域才会被激活。研究人员解释说，精神病人能同时表现出冷酷无情和富有魅力。研究人员认为，可以通过训练激活精神病人同情心开关，帮助他们康复。有精神病特质的罪犯通常对他人包括受害者有较少的同情心，他们也比其他非精神病罪犯在释放后更容易再犯。
