根据发表在《环境研究快报》上的研究报告，气候变化对人造成的危害影响有限，空气污染才是真正的"隐形杀手"。研究人员利用从1850年至2000年的臭氧和PM2.5大气浓度模型得出结论，前工业化时代以来与气候因素造成的空气污染有关的死亡率只占很小的比例。研究计算，每年只有约3700人的死亡原因可以归因于气候变化对空气质量的影响，其中死于臭氧原因的1500人，2200人的死亡与细颗粒有关。相比之下，每年死于人为增加臭氧的就约有47万人；而空气中人为引起的微小悬浮颗粒造成的癌症和其他呼吸系统疾病，每年更是导致约210万人死亡。
