2013年诺贝尔生理学或医学奖授予了在细胞囊泡运输研究上作出突出贡献的三位科学家：耶鲁大学的James E.Rothman、加州大学伯克利分校的Randy W.Schekman，以及斯坦福大学的Thomas C.Südhof。每个细胞都是一个制造和输出分子的工厂。例如胰岛素分子制造出后被释放到血液中，而名叫神经递质的化学信号被从一个神经细胞发送到另一个细胞。这些分子都是通过名叫囊泡的细胞内囊状构造运输出去。这三位科学家发现了控制货物如何在正确时间发送到细胞正确位置的分子原理。
