日本的一项研究发现，来自中国的有毒空气污染了富士山。富士山被认为不会受到城市污染，但2007年开始的污染监测显示，当中国大陆吹来污染空气，汞含量随之而增加。一立方米空气中最多能测量出2.8毫微克的汞，而清洁空气中的汞含量在每立方米1.0到1.5微克左右。对人体健康构成风险的汞含量是每立方米40毫微克。1毫微克等于十亿分之一克。空气中的汞可能来自中国的燃煤工厂，煤燃烧会释放出汞和砷等有毒元素。中国已经宣布要减少空气污染。
