安全公司F-Secure的研究总监 Mikko Hypponen在LinuxCon上发表主题演讲，评论了NSA的大规模监视活动，认为网民容易遭受大规模在线监视，原因是互联网已经变成了"美国的一块殖民地"，美国的网络权力熏天。他说，我们回到了殖民时代，我们应该认识到美国人就是我们的主人。他指出，绝大多数欧洲政客每天都要用到美国的服务，而绝大多数美国的政界和商界领袖并不需要使用欧洲的服务。他认为应对这一问题的解决方法是使用开源系统，使用开放的云和开放的操作系统。相比闭源商业系统，政府很难在开源软件中植入后门。
