《航空周刊》报导，自从洛克希德的SR-71黑鸟二十年前退役之后，一个永恒的问题是：它是否会有接替者？如有，何时会出现？现在，洛克希德马丁的臭鼬工厂透露了下一代高超音速间谍侦察飞机SR-72的研制计划。SR-72计划在2018年进入到试飞演示阶段，采用双引擎结构，能以6马赫速度飞行，设计填补卫星和亚音速侦察平台之间日益扩大的快速反应情报收集空缺。高超音速飞行面临的一个挑战是：目前的涡轮引擎最大速度2.5马赫，而高超音速冲压引擎需要在3到3.5马赫才能启动， 如何在引擎的推力鸿沟之间架起桥梁？臭鼬工厂没有披露它的方法。
