对火星移民来说，这是一大利好消息。研究人员在《科学》期刊上发表论文，NASA好奇号火星漫游车发现，火星表面土壤按重量算约2%是水分，意味着每立方英尺(不到0.03立方米)的火星土壤能够获得约1升的水。好奇号携带的样本分析仪，将提取到的第一铲细粒土壤加热到835摄氏度的高温，结果分解出水、二氧化碳以及含硫化合物等物质，其中水的质量约占2%。研究人员说，"现在知道火星上应该有丰富的、可轻易获得的水"，这是"最令人激动的结果之一"。今后如果有人登上火星，只需在火星表面铲起土壤，然后稍稍加热，就可获得水。
