小蜘蛛会利用蜘蛛丝作为飞翔的工具,它们将蜘蛛丝喷向空中,像乘气球一样升到空中迁徙到不同的地方。生物学家曾在海拔4公里的高空发现过它们。传统观点认为, 蜘蛛丝利用了热气流,但这无法解释在无风或微风的情况下蜘蛛是如何实现飞升的。根据发表在预印本网站的一篇论文,夏威夷大学物理学家Peter Gorham发展了近两百年前的一个观点:蜘蛛利用静电力升到空中。地球表面存在天然的电场,平均每米电压120伏特,方向向下。Gorham计算发现,一串蜘蛛丝只需要携带30左右nanoCoulombs的负电荷就能提升起一只蜘蛛。
