过去一周，北京连续多天被雾霾笼罩，一时防尘口罩在京城脱销。但口罩真的帮助人们免受严重雾霾天气的影响吗？伊利诺伊大学的卫生专家Lisa Brosseau认为，口罩只是给佩戴者带来虚假信心。市场上能买到的防尘口罩如N95口罩类似医生在做手术时戴的医用口罩。医用口罩设计防止医生口液中的细菌通过敞开的伤口传给患者，它从来不是设计保护佩戴者本人。虽然研究显示口罩能减缓流感的传播，但佩戴口罩并不能防止吸入有害的病菌和空气污染。N95口罩常用于工地，主要用于防止吸入铅尘和焊接烟，能过滤空气中95%的颗粒。但为了有效工作，N95口罩需要专业的佩戴（PDF），确保密封无泄露，它不适合有胡须的人使用。如果正确佩戴，使用者会感到不舒服。
