部分金融服务公司正考虑将他们的庞大ATM机器大军从Windows迁移到Linux，以更好的控制硬件和软件升级周期。迫使他们考虑这一想法的原因是微软决定在下个月的4月8日结束对XP的支持。ATM运营商希望能同步硬件和软件升级周期，但在制定升级时间表上很难与微软达成一致，因此部分运营商考虑使用非微软的操作系统。全世界约95%的ATM机器运行Windows XP操作系统，其中美国的六成以上ATM预计在4月8日之后仍然会运行XP，对许多运营商来说，升级到Windows 7将需要同时升级硬件，从而增加总的迁移费用。
