NSA和GCHQ都是世界最大的数学家雇主，当NSA和GCHQ大规模监视活动曝光之后，数学家社区对其是什么反应？大多数人是完全忽视。英国爱丁堡大学的数学家Tom Leinster在《新科学家》上呼吁拒绝与NSS和GCHQ进行合作。他以Dual_EC_DRBG为例指出，要在加密算法中植入后门没有数学家的帮助是不可能办到的。数学家现在面临一个伦理学问题。以前数学家认为他们所做的和日常世界无关，比如G.
