为什么我们记不清三岁前发生的事情？一项新的研究认为，"婴儿失忆症"根源或在于大脑海马区神经细胞的快速生长，海马区是负责将新经验转化为长期记忆的区域。多伦多 Hospital for Sick Children的科学家Paul Frankland说，婴儿在前几年无法形成稳定记忆，他有一个4岁女儿，能记住2到3个月前参观过的地方的部分细节，但四年之后她将完全记不清其中任何事。海马区成熟缓慢，直到3到4岁之后才略微成熟，2到3岁的婴儿能短期记住一些事情，但无法形成长期记忆。
