纽约时报专栏作家、诺贝尔经济学奖得主克鲁格曼（Paul Krugman）就大众广泛接受的三次工业革命提出了新的看法，认为第三次革命才刚刚开始，其影响才初步显现，越来越多的工作将由机器完成。

第一次工业革命以蒸汽机和铁路为代表，时间是在1750年到1830年；第二次工业革命以电力、内燃机，自来水、室内厕所、通讯，娱乐，化工和石油为代表，时间是在1870年到1900年；第三次工业革命以计算机，互联网和移动电话为代表，时间是从1960年到现在。但克鲁格曼认为，IT革命才刚刚开始，机器人取代人类的情景还没有发生，大数据和语音识别正帮助人类朝着智能机器人的世界前进。
