美国国家安全局（NSA）设立了一个安全科学竞赛（Science of Security Competition），以表彰与国家安全相关的最优秀论文，此奖项也是为了加强NSA与学界的关系。首届竞赛的获胜者授予了Google工程师Joseph Bonneau博士，其获奖论文《The science of guessing》(PDF)讨论了密码的性质。Bonneau博士在其博客上不可避免的提及了最近曝光的NSA大规模监听活动，他认为在目前的形式下像NSA这样的机构不兼容于自由社会。
