《南华早报》自7月13日开始连续发表了四篇采访马云的专题报道，根据Google快照，其中第一篇文章在发表之后曾被删除，在剔除了部分中国大陆敏感词后重新上线（已恢复被删减内容），之后中国官方媒体如新华网转载的就是这个删减版。《南华早报》发表声明，证实是记者刘怡未经授权擅自进入系统，对已由编辑同意刊发的最后定稿进行删改。删改后的版本将受访者马云对六四的言论刪除。这与采访的录音原始记录不相符。《南华早报》称在发现后，马上恢复文章的原貌。同时暂停刘怡的工作，并展开全面内部调查。但就在调查期间，刘怡却于7月19日提出辞职。《南华早报》表示将继续按公司员工纪律规定进行调查。刘怡则在Facebook上发表声明，声称一开始上线的并非最终修订版本，所以她未授权去改了原文。阿里巴巴在微博上发表声明说《南华早报》有不正当引述。
