《卫报》报道，中国政府正使用无人机加强对北京、山西及河北三地的天气质量监管。在每次两小时的例行飞行工作中，无人机通常以每小时70公里的速度在空中鸟瞰地面并完成拍摄。官媒《中国日报》称，无人机已帮助政府部门证实了超过200个城市存在有相关环境问题。政府还在考虑将无人机监察应用到其他更多的重污染地区。除了采集环境数据这个主要工作之外，无人机还被用于评估当地政府在促进环境保护方面的表现。环保部门还考虑在重度污染的天气状况下，用无人机喷洒化学药物来分散大气中高浓度的烟雾。
