人们普遍相信，与年龄相关的认知运动功能显著下降是从45岁左右的中年开始。要完全理解这种"走下坡路"的直觉，科学家还需要从真实世界表现的直接测量中寻找出年龄相关的功能衰退。即时战略游戏《星际争霸2》需要玩家有较高的微控技术才有可能击败对手，它虽然不属于日常活动，但和棋类游戏和篮球都是一种真实世界任务。加拿大的两位心理学家和一位统计学家合作，分析了3305名16岁到44岁《星际争霸2》玩家的表现，发现与年龄相关的反应速度下降是从24岁开始。研究报告发表在PLOS ONE上。
