Feb. 28, 2013 — Having more control in the workplace can have negative consequences for individuals but it depends on the form of job control, according to new research out of the University of Toronto.

Sociologist Scott Schieman measured a range of work conditions using data from a national survey of 6,004 Canadian workers. To measure levels of job pressure, he asked study participants questions such as: "How often do you feel overwhelmed by how much you had to do at work?" "How often do you have to work on too many tasks at the same time?" and "How often do the demands of your job exceed the time you have to do the work?"
He found that roughly one-third of Canadian workers report that they "often" or "very often" feel overwhelmed by work or that the demands of their job exceed the time to do the work. Four out of 10 workers report having to work on too many tasks at the same time "often" or "very often."
"Excessive job demands have detrimental effects," says Schieman. "We know that workers who report higher scores on these indicators of job pressure also tend to experience more problems navigating work and family roles, more symptoms of physical and mental health problems and they tend to be less satisfied with their work."
The study found that having control over one's work schedule and job autonomy are associated with lower levels of job pressure. However, challenging work in which one is required to keep learning new things, engage in creative activities, use skills and abilities and handle a variety of tasks, is associated with higher levels of job pressure as is being in a position of authority where one is supervising or managing others.
Three key indicators of higher socioeconomic status (SES) -- education, higher status occupations (executives or professionals) and income -- were each independently associated with greater job pressure. "However, those with high SES face greater pressure mostly because of their more challenging work and greater levels of authority," says Schieman.
"These findings speak directly to the idea of the stress of higher status. People talk these days about being 'crazy busy' and not having enough time to do all the things at work that need to get done. But being 'crazy busy' isn't randomly distributed in the population. This study demonstrates an unexpected price for higher SES and more control at work -and that price is excessive pressure in the workplace."

Feb. 28, 2013 — Max Planck scientists in Jena, Germany, have discovered an unusual regulation of enzymes that catalyze chain elongation in an important secondary metabolism, the terpenoid pathway. In the horseradish leaf beetle Phaedon cochleariae a single enzyme can trigger the production of two completely different substances depending on whether it is regulated by cobalt, manganese or magnesium ions: iridoids, which are defensive substances the larvae use to repel predators, or juvenile hormones, which control insect's development. Insects unlike plants do not have a large arsenal of the proteins called isoprenyl diphosphate synthases. Therefore they may have developed another efficient option to channel metabolites into the different directions of terpenoid metabolism by using metal ions for control.

Natural products: 40,000 terpenes
Apart from the primary metabolism which produces substances that ensure the survival of the cells, there are additional biosynthetic pathways in all organisms. Their products may be less important for a single cell, but they can nevertheless be essential for the whole organism. These pathways are summarized as secondary metabolism. One of them is the terpenoid pathway: with more than 40,000 different known structures it generates one of the largest classes of natural products. Terpenoid molecules have diverse functions and can act as components in molecular signaling pathways, as toxins, fragrances or hormones.
The basic unit of all terpenes is a simple molecule containing five carbon atoms that can be joined to chains of different length. There are monoterpenes (C10 units, 2 x C5), sesquiterpenes (C15, 3 x C5), and even polymers, such as natural rubber, which comprises several hundred C5 units. Special enzymes mediate chain elongation. These enzymes have attracted the curiosity of scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology, Jena, and the Leibniz Institute for Plant Biochemistry in Halle. They studied mechanistic alternatives of how chain elongation is regulated.
Metal ions instead of specialized enzymes
Enzymes involved in chain elongation belong to the group of isoprenyl diphosphate synthases. Such an enzyme was isolated from larvae of the horseradish leaf beetle Phaedon cochleariae. It raised the interest of Antje Burse, project group leader in the Department of Bioorganic Chemistry at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology.
Experiments with larvae in which the enzyme encoding gene was silenced showed that the protein was involved in the formation of the C10 monoterpene chrysomelidial that larvae produce to defend themselves against predators. The larvae accumulate this monoterpene in special glands and release it as a defensive secretion when they are attacked by their enemies, such as ants.
However, surprising results emerged after comprehensive biochemical characterization of the enzyme. "After we had conducted an in vitro analysis of the protein, including measurements of product formation in the presence of different metal ions as co-factors, we were surprised to discover that only geranyl diphosphate (C10), a precursor for the defensive substance chrysomelidial, was produced after addition of cobalt and manganese ions. On the other hand, adding magnesium ions resulted in the formation of farnesyl diphosphate (C15), a potential precursor for juvenile hormones, which is 5 carbon atoms longer," says the scientist. All three metals were found in larval tissue, leading to the assumption that enzyme catalysis is directed by the different metal co-factors in the larvae, whichever is predominant in amount: Towards toxin or hormone − physiologically a major difference.
Sequence comparisons cannot replace a thorough biochemical analysis
How the different metal ions modify the product range of the enzyme is still unclear. It is very likely that the varying atomic radii of the metal ions involved in the catalysis effect changes in the spatial structure of the enzyme, which prevent or allow the admission of a third C5 unit and hence result in the production of C10 or C15 molecules.
"Our experiments provide two important findings," says Wilhelm Boland, director at the Max Planck Institute. "First, the directing influence of metal ions on the product formation of isoprenyl diphosphate synthases is a novel "control element" in the regulation of the terpene metabolism which should be included in future experimental settings. And secondly: The diversity of terpenoid molecules cannot be attributed solely to the broad substrate specificity of some enzymes in the last steps of the metabolic pathway, but is in fact already inherent in early biosynthetic steps." Nature continues to provide interesting answers to the question how organisms manage to produce tens of thousands of different secondary metabolites.

  新浪科技讯 北京时间2月28日晚间消息,由于面临进一步拓展营收的压力,Facebook将大力推广Facebook Exchange,允许商家根据用户的网络浏览习惯实时购买广告。
  Facebook Exchange于5个月前推出,公司首席运营官谢丽尔·桑德伯格(Sheryl Sandberg)上个月曾表示,Facebook Exchange目前拥有1300多家客户。而如今,Facebook计划进一步拓展该服务,准备在亚洲和拉美市场推出。
  Facebook CEO马克·扎克伯格(Mark Zuckerberg)也试图通过该服务和其他新服务来推动营收增长,并继续维持股价增长。据预计,Facebook Exchange今年的营收将达到4.6亿美元,届时将缩小与谷歌之间的差距。
  调研公司Pivotal Research Group分析师布莱恩·韦瑟(Brian Wieser)称:"他们获得了新的营收源。Facebook Exchange的表现相当不错,将给Facebook带来显著营收。"
  Facebook当前主要通过广告获取营收,而这些广告主要基于用户信息。Facebook Exchange也不例外,它允许商家根据用户所浏览的网站确定目标用户。例如,浏览过汽车网站的Facebook用户将来可能会看到轿车或卡车广告。

  今日晚间,京东商城针对拖欠结款一事发表详细声明。京东商城在声明里确认了货款13个月未结的事实,但称延迟结款的原因在于阿芙方面提供的增值税发票信息错误。

  而后,阿芙单方面通过微博发布消息,声明"阿芙在京东撤店"。为体现开放平台的公平原则,我司同意了阿芙终止合作的申请,并开始进入财务清算环节。
  二、阿芙创始人反馈的"京东拖欠货款"始末
  阿芙之所以有13个月的货款没有结算的原因是:阿芙在结算2011年10月款项时,将增值税发票信息开错。京东商城在入账发现问题后,我司财务与阿芙沟通,告知阿芙需到其所在税务机构开据红票冲抵。阿芙在此之后一直未开具红票,致使双方无法正常结算。后我司花费很大精力,才帮其将红票事项处理好,才使得结款能顺利进行下去。且,阿芙还欠运费没有结清,双方在当时互有欠款;
  因涉及核对帐款、运费(阿芙所欠京东的运费)、交付发票这些细节;我司运营、财务人员当时和阿芙方面商定:"对清一笔结算一笔,直到结清全部款项"。阿芙自2012年12月开始,共提交7次结款申请,之前我司一直在正常付款。直到阿芙创始人单方面发出微博的当天(2013年2月27号),京东还有一笔货款付出给阿芙。
  需要指出的是,目前我司尚未收到对方应付的运费部分,也未收到相应增值税发票。
  三、目前进展
  在阿芙创始人在微博发布消息后,我司虽然很不理解其不顾之前双方商定的付款约定的单方面行为,但仍本着最大诚意迅速与财务等相关部门紧急沟通,并与阿芙相关人员联系,寻求解决方案。但令人疑惑的是,阿芙不接我们电话、不回我们短信,在此我们呼吁阿芙能够与我们坦诚沟通,尽快找到双方满意的解决方案。
  四、我们想对合作伙伴说

  在阿芙创始人在微博发布消息后,我司虽然很不理解其不顾之前双方商定的付款约定的单方面行为,但仍本着最大诚意迅速与财务等相关部门紧急沟通,并与阿芙相关人员联系,寻求解决方案。但令人疑惑的是,阿芙不接我们电话、不回我们短信,在此我们呼吁阿芙能够与我们坦诚沟通,尽快找到双方满意的解决方案。

  北京时间2月28日晚间消息,美国最大传统书店运营商巴诺公司(Barnes & Noble)(NYSE:BKS)周四发布财报称,第三财季业绩意外出现亏损,主要由于Nook电子书和设备业务营收的大幅下滑,以及旗下书店销售额的下降。
  截至1月26日的财季,该公司业绩从上年同期的5200万美元,合每股71美分,转为净亏损610万美元,合每股18美分。营收下降9%,至22.2亿美元,低于接受FactSet调查的分析师平均预期的24亿美元。

  新浪科技讯 北京时间2月28日晚间消息,由于面临进一步拓展营收的压力,Facebook将大力推广Facebook Exchange,允许商家根据用户的网络浏览习惯实时购买广告。
  Facebook Exchange于5个月前推出,公司首席运营官谢丽尔·桑德伯格(Sheryl Sandberg)上个月曾表示,Facebook Exchange目前拥有1300多家客户。而如今,Facebook计划进一步拓展该服务,准备在亚洲和拉美市场推出。
  Facebook CEO马克·扎克伯格(Mark Zuckerberg)也试图通过该服务和其他新服务来推动营收增长,并继续维持股价增长。据预计,Facebook Exchange今年的营收将达到4.6亿美元,届时将缩小与谷歌之间的差距。
  调研公司Pivotal Research Group分析师布莱恩·韦瑟(Brian Wieser)称:"他们获得了新的营收源。Facebook Exchange的表现相当不错,将给Facebook带来显著营收。"

Feb. 28, 2013 — In a significant advance for brain-machine interfaces, engineers at Brown University have developed a novel wireless, broadband, rechargeable, fully implantable brain sensor that has performed well in animal models for more than a year. They describe the result in the Journal of Neural Engineering and at a conference this week.

A team of neuroengineers based at Brown University has developed a fully implantable and rechargeable wireless brain sensor capable of relaying real-time broadband signals from up to 100 neurons in freely moving subjects. Several copies of the novel low-power device, described in the Journal of Neural Engineering, have been performing well in animal models for more than year, a first in the brain-computer interface field. Brain-computer interfaces coud help people with severe paralysis control devces with their thoughts.
Arto Nurmikko, professor of engineering at Brown University who oversaw the device's invention, is presenting it this week at the 2013 International Workshop on Clinical Brain-Machine Interface Systems in Houston.
"This has features that are somewhat akin to a cell phone, except the conversation that is being sent out is the brain talking wirelessly," Nurmikko said.
Neuroscientists can use such a device to observe, record, and analyze the signals emitted by scores of neurons in particular parts of the animal model's brain.
Meanwhile, wired systems using similar implantable sensing electrodes are being investigated in brain-computer interface research to assess the feasibility of people with severe paralysis moving assistive devices like robotic arms or computer cursors by thinking about moving their arms and hands.
This wireless system addresses a major need for the next step in providing a practical brain-computer interface," said neuroscientist John Donoghue, the Wriston Professor of Neuroscience at Brown University and director of the Brown Institute for Brain Science.
Tightly packed technology
In the device, a pill-sized chip of electrodes implanted on the cortex sends signals through uniquely designed electrical connections into the device's laser-welded, hermetically sealed titanium "can." The can measures 2.2 inches (56 mm) long, 1.65 inches (42 mm) wide, and 0.35 inches (9 mm) thick. That small volume houses an entire signal processing system: a lithium ion battery, ultralow-power integrated circuits designed at Brown for signal processing and conversion, wireless radio and infrared transmitters, and a copper coil for recharging -- a "brain radio." All the wireless and charging signals pass through an electromagnetically transparent sapphire window.
In all, the device looks like a miniature sardine can with a porthole.
But what the team has packed inside makes it a major advance among brain-machine interfaces, said lead author David Borton, a former Brown graduate student and postdoctoral research associate who is now at Ecole Polytechnique Federale Lausanne in Switzerland.
"What makes the achievement discussed in this paper unique is how it integrated many individual innovations into a complete system with potential for neuroscientific gain greater than the sum of its parts," Borton said. "Most importantly, we show the first fully implanted microsystem operated wirelessly for more than 12 months in large animal models -- a milestone for potential [human] clinical translation."
The device transmits data at 24 Mbps via 3.2 and 3.8 Ghz microwave frequencies to an external receiver. After a two-hour charge, delivered wirelessly through the scalp via induction, it can operate for more than six hours.
"The device uses less than 100 milliwatts of power, a key figure of merit," Nurmikko said.
Co-author Ming Yin, a Brown postdoctoral scholar and electrical engineer, said one of the major challenges that the team overcame in building the device was optimizing its performance given the requirements that the implant device be small, low-power and leak-proof, potentially for decades.
"We tried to make the best tradeoff between the critical specifications of the device, such as power consumption, noise performance, wireless bandwidth and operational range," Yin said. "Another major challenge we encountered was to integrate and assemble all the electronics of the device into a miniaturized package that provides long-term hermeticity (water-proofing) and biocompatibility as well as transparency to the wireless data, power, and on-off switch signals."
With early contributions by electrical engineer William Patterson at Brown, Yin helped to design the custom chips for converting neural signals into digital data. The conversion has to be done within the device, because brain signals are not produced in the ones and zeros of computer data.
Ample applications
The team worked closely with neurosurgeons to implant the device in three pigs and three rhesus macaque monkeys. The research in these six animals has been helping scientists better observe complex neural signals for as long as 16 months so far. In the new paper, the team shows some of the rich neural signals they have been able to record in the lab. Ultimately this could translate to significant advances that can also inform human neuroscience.
Current wired systems constrain the actions of research subjects, Nurmikko said. The value of wireless transmission is that it frees subjects to move however they intend, allowing them to produce a wider variety of more realistic behaviors. If neuroscientists want to observe the brain signals produced during some running or foraging behaviors, for instance, they can't use a cabled sensor to study how neural circuits would form those plans for action and execution or strategize in decision making.
In the experiments in the new paper, the device is connected to one array of 100 cortical electrodes, the microscale individual neural listening posts, but the new device design allows for multiple arrays to be connected, Nurmikko said. That would allow scientists to observe ensembles of neurons in multiple related areas of a brain network.
The new wireless device is not approved for use in humans and is not used in clinical trials of brain-computer interfaces. It was designed, however, with that translational motivation.
"This was conceived very much in concert with the larger BrainGate* team, including neurosurgeons and neurologists giving us advice as to what were appropriate strategies for eventual clinical applications," said Nurmikko, who is also affiliated with the Brown Institute for Brain Science.
Borton is now spearheading the development of a collaboration between EPFL and Brown to use a version of the device to study the role of the motor cortex in an animal model of Parkinson's disease.
Meanwhile the Brown team is continuing work on advancing the device for even larger amounts of neural data transmission, reducing its size even further, and improving other aspects of the device's safety and reliability so that it can someday be considered for clinical application in peop0le with movement disabilities.
In addition to Nurmikko, Borton and Yin, the paper was also co-authored by Juan Aceros, an expert in mechanical engineering.

Feb. 28, 2013 — Earth Day may be more than a month away, but another, more personal, ecosystem has been shown to also be worth protecting -- within our bodies are communities of microbes that affect the behavior of human cells hosting them. These communities, called the "microbiome," is so crucial to our health that some consider it to be a complex "second genome." Understanding the interaction of these microbes among one another and their human hosts has the potential to yield insights into numerous diseases and complex human disorders from obesity to susceptibility to infection.

In a new report appearing in the March 2013 issue of The FASEB Journal, scientists take an important step toward designing a uniform protocol for microbiome research that ensures proper controls and considerations for variations among people. By doing this, future researchers should be able to better assess how what we ingest, whether drugs or food, affects our bodies.
"While historically pre and probiotics have dominated the microbiome landscape, emerging data from numerous labs as to the impact of dietary interventions and antibiotic exposure will play formative roles in tailoring therapy," said Kjersti M. Aagaard, M.D., Ph.D., from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. "We may find that the answers to our most common and prevalent health and disease states lies not in manipulating the human genome, but rather, in utilizing subtle shifts in diet and components of the diet, efficacy trials in prophylactic or preventative antibiotic therapies, and care attention to the over prescription of steroids and antibiotics."
Aagaard and colleagues completed comprehensive body site sampling in healthy 18-40 year old adults, creating an unparalleled reference set of microbiome specimens. Researchers then screened 554 individuals to enroll 300 (149 males, 151 females, mean age 26, mean BMI 24, 20.0 percent racial minority and 10.7 percent Hispanic). Scientists obtained specimens from several body sites to evaluate the longitudinal changes in an individual's microbiome by sampling 279 participants twice (mean 212 days after first sampling, range 30-359), and 100 individuals three times (mean 72 days after second sampling, range 30-224). This sampling strategy yielded 11,174 primary specimens, from which 12,479 DNA samples were submitted to four centers for metagenomic sequencing. This clinical design and well-defined reference cohort has laid a baseline foundation for microbiome research.
"Whether it is yogurt, penicillin, or diet soda, each alters the microbial communities that live within us," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal. "This pioneering study promises to provide their names and numbers, so that we can understand how diet, disease or drugs affect our internal ecosystem."

Feb. 27, 2013 — Accelerating a free electron with a laser has been a longtime goal of solid-state physicists. David Cline, a distinguished professor in the UCLA Department of Physics and Astronomy, and Xiaoping Ding, an assistant researcher at UCLA, have conducted research at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York and have established that an electron beam can be accelerated by a laser in free space.

This has never been done before at high energies and represents a significant breakthrough, Cline said, adding that it also may have implications for fusion as a new energy source.
In free space, a plane-wave laser is unable to accelerate an electron, according to the Lawson-Woodward theorem, posited in 1979. However, Yu-kun Ho, a professor at China's Fudan University in Shanghai, and his research group have proposed a concept of what physicists refer to as the capture-acceleration scenario to show that an electron can be accelerated by a tightly focused laser in a vacuum.
In the capture-acceleration scenario, the diffraction from a tightly focused laser changes not only the intensity distribution of the laser but also its phase distribution, which results in the field phase velocity being lower than the speed of light in a vacuum in some areas.
Thus, a channel that overlaps features of both strong longitudinal electric field and low-laser-phase velocity is created, and electrons can receive energy gain from the laser. The acceleration effect increases along with increasing laser intensity, Cline said. This channel for electrons may be useful for other scientific endeavors, such as guiding an electron beam into a specific region of laser fusion applications, he said.
A possible application of this discovery is the use of laser plasma fusion to provide a new energy source for the U.S. and other countries. The focus of the laser generates a natural channel that can capture electrons and drive them into a pellet that explodes, by fusion, to produce excess energy, Cline said.
With federal funding from the U.S. Department of Energy, a project to carry out a proof-of-principle beam test for the novel vacuum acceleration at Brookhaven National Laboratory's Accelerator Test Facility (BNL-ATF) has been proposed and approved -- a collaboration among the UCLA Center for Advanced Accelerators, of which Cline is principal investigator, Ho's group and the Accelerator Test Facility team.
BNL-ATF is one of the few facilities that can provide both a high-quality electron beam and a high-intensity laser beam for the beam test, Cline said. Ho's group provides theoretical support. UCLA scientists -- Cline, Ding and Lei Shao, a former UCLA physics graduate student of Cline's -- are responsible for the whole experiment and the experimental data analysis.
Simulation research work and hardware design have been done in accordance with BNL-ATF's experimental conditions. The simulation results predict that vacuum laser acceleration phenomena can be observed with ATF's diagnostic system.

  北京时间2月28日晚间消息,美国最大传统书店运营商巴诺公司(Barnes & Noble)(NYSE:BKS)周四发布财报称,第三财季业绩意外出现亏损,主要由于Nook电子书和设备业务营收的大幅下滑,以及旗下书店销售额的下降。
  截至1月26日的财季,该公司业绩从上年同期的5200万美元,合每股71美分,转为净亏损610万美元,合每股18美分。营收下降9%,至22.2亿美元,低于接受FactSet调查的分析师平均预期的24亿美元。

Feb. 28, 2013 — Order tends towards disorder. This is also true for quantum states. Measurements at the Vienna University of Technology show that in quantum mechanics this transition can be quite different from what we experience in our daily lives.

Ice cubes in a cocktail glass melt until an equilibrium state is reached in which the ice cubes are gone. After that, the geometric shape of the ice cubes is completely lost. The liquid does not contain any memory of their shape, the ordered ice crystal has turned into disordered water molecules. Ultra cold Bose-Einstein condensates behave differently; these highly ordered clouds of ultra cold particles also approach a disordered equilibrium state, but they retain some "memory" about their initial state for a remarkably long time. This phenomenon does not depend on the temperature, it seems to be a stable, fundamental property of quantum physics.
Stopover on the Way to Chaos
In 2012, the research group around Professor Jörg Schmiedmayer at the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ), Vienna University of Technology, were able to show that they have found an intermediate state between order and disorder; the atoms of an ultra cold Bose-Einstein condensate tend towards an equilibrium state, in which their quantum physical properties are not visible any more.
This, however, does not happen continuously like the transition from an ice cube to liquid water. Instead, there is an intermediate step called "prethermalized state," in which the atoms remain for a surprisingly long time without forgetting about their quantum mechanical origin. "If we split the atom cloud into two parts and recombine them after some time, a wave pattern forms," Jörg Schmiedmayer explains. "That is proof that the atom clouds still contain information about having emerged from a highly ordered quantum physical state."
Intermediate State Independent of Temperature
Now the scientists have managed to take a closer look at this transition -- and it turns out to be remarkably stable with respect to external conditions. From experience, we are used to the opposite case: "Imagine a room full of air, and a vacuum in the room next to it," says Max Kuhnert (Vienna University of Technology). "When we open a door between those rooms, the system approaches an equilibrium, until the molecules are evenly distributed in the two rooms. This transition, however, strongly depends on external parameters such as pressure and temperature." The higher the pressure and the temperature, the faster information about the initial state is lost -- be it information about the initial distribution of air molecules or about the geometry of melting ice cubes.
"The prethermalized state of our atom clouds is reached quite independently from pressure and temperature," says Max Kuhnert. The experiments, which have now been published in Physical Review Letters, show that this state is characterized by a new length scale. This so-called correlation length is a direct measure of the quantum memory of the ordered initial state. It is the length scale on which the quantum physical properties of the atom clouds can still be perceived.
"This emergent correlation length is defined by the density of the initial quantum gas, but it only becomes visible in the dynamics of the transition from an ordered state into the prethermalized state" says Jörg Schmiedmayer. "The fact that this correlation length does not depend on the initial temperature at all strongly indicates that the prethermalized state is a fundamental property of quantum physics and has major significance," Max Kuhnert believes. A deeper understanding of this quantum state is expected not only to explain ultra cold Bose-Einstein condensates, it may also shed some light on the processes in the early universe, or it could help to understand phenomena in the quark-gluon-plasma created in high energy particle accelerators.

Feb. 28, 2013 — A novel discovery brings a close to a 17-year-old scientific debate about the impact of mechanical stretching on the structure of DNA.

A team of researchers led by Associate Professor Yan Jie from the Department of Physics at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Faculty of Science has identified three new distinct overstretched deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) structures caused by mechanical stretching. This discovery provides a clear answer to a long-running debate among scientists over the nature of DNA overstretching.
Debate on Possible DNA Structural Transitions
Recent single-molecule studies revealed that mechanical stretching could induce transitions to elongated DNA structures. Three possible elongated DNA structures have been proposed, namely: a single-stranded DNA under tension, DNA bubbles consisting two parallel, separated single-stranded DNA under tension, and a new form of base-paired double-stranded DNA. The existence of the three transitions has been heavily discussed among scientists for some 17 years.
To fully understand the nature of DNA overstretching, the team led by Assoc Prof Yan, which comprises members from NUS, the University of Minnesota and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, explored the possible structural transitions.
Three Distinct Transitions Revealed
In their recent study, the researchers systematically investigated the three possible transitions induced by mechanical stretching, with methods to control DNA construct, temperature, force and salt concentration. Their data successfully identified all the three proposed structures and fully characterised their respective thermo-mechanical properties. These findings were first published on the online version of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on 19 February 2013. These findings complete the picture about the structures of DNA under tension, providing a conclusion to the 17-year-old debate.
Biological Implications and Potential Applications
As forces over a wide range are present in the DNA of cells, the researchers' findings provide new perspectives of possible force-dependent regulations of critical biological processes, such as DNA damage repair and gene transcriptions.
In addition, as many recently developed DNA devices are based on thermo-mechanical properties of various DNA structural motifs, these findings may also have potential applications in designing new DNA devices for the future.
The Next Step
To further their research, Assoc Prof Yan and his team will study the physiological functions of the three overstretched DNA structures, and investigate the presence of any new DNA structures under other mechanical constraints.

Feb. 28, 2013 — Forest-living insects and spiders become less abundant and birds are adversely affected along regulated rivers. Three different studies by ecologists at Umeå University in Sweden show that river regulation has a negative effect also on land-living animals.

It is already well known that river regulation influences salmon migration, aquatic insects and streamside vegetation, but effects on land-living animals have been poorly studied.
When free-flowing rivers become regulated, there is a reduction in the number of aquatic insects that, during spring and summer, emerge and fly onto land where they become food for land-living animals.
"Our studies show that the number of flying insects is lower along regulated rivers than along free-flowing rivers. This results in fewer forest-living insects and spiders along regulated rivers, as the resource they feed upon -- emergent aquatic insects -- is reduced," says ecologist Micael Jonsson, the lead author on two of the articles.
Together with a group of researchers, he has compared the abundance of insect-feeding animals along similar river stretches at four regulated and four free-flowing large rivers in northern Sweden and the Finnish Kemi River. Along these rivers, flying and ground-dwelling insects were caught. The flying insects were caught with a net mounted on the top of a moving car, and the ground-dwelling insects and spiders were caught in pitfall traps.
The research team also shows that birds are adversely affected by river regulation. Besides a standardised bird survey, nest boxes were used to investigate breeding success of insectivorous birds. The study species, the Pied Flycatcher, is a relatively common species and prefers to use nest boxes.
The results show that adult Pied Flycatchers breeding along regulated rivers lost more weight after their eggs were hatched and fewer of the chicks survived, because their food resource -- the insects -- was less abundant. Along one of the regulated rivers, the survival of the chicks was even lower than what is required for the species to persist.
There were also signs of whole bird communities being impacted by river regulation. Aquatic insect emerge and fly onto land before terrestrial insects peak in numbers. The aquatic insects are therefore an important food resource for birds early in the season, while, normally, birds are seen foraging away from aquatic systems later in the season.
"We could see that such seasonal movements of whole bird communities differed between regulated and free-flowing rivers," says Micael Jonsson.
That the effects are still visible half a century after regulation of these rivers was initiated clearly indicates that the changes are permanent. The studies also highlight the fact that different types of ecosystems influence each other via resource flows, and that changes in one ecosystem therefore affect plant and animals in nearby ecosystems.
"Therefore, there are even stronger reasons to question the use of biological insecticides to reduce the numbers of mosquitoes along rivers in central Sweden and elsewhere in the world, because it most likely results in poorer living conditions for a range of land-living animals."
The studies are published in the international journals River Research and Applications, Ibis, and Ecological Research.

  新浪科技讯 2月28日晚间消息,互联网名称与数字地址分配机构(ICANN)副总裁李晓东表示,ICANN计划在全球建立多个运营中心,将以美国为中心的总部职能向亚太以及欧洲、中东和非洲转移,另外将在多个国家设立代表处,其中北京将设立全球首个代表处。
  据悉,亚洲将是ICANN全球三大运营中心之一, ICANN将在北京设立全球首个代表处,并聘请本地雇员提高本地社群服务能力。李晓东介绍称,这充分说明了中国互联网在世界互联网舞台上扮演越来越重要的角色,日益成为全球互联网的重要组成部分。
  ICANN第46届会议将于4月7日至11日在北京举行,日前ICANN总裁兼首席执行官 Fadi Chehade一行访问了会议主要承办方中国互联网络信息中心(CNNIC)。此行为Fadi任职ICANN总裁兼首席执行官后访问亚洲的首站,ICANN还拜访了中国工业和信息化部、国家互联网信息办等单位,此行Fadi还将访问日本、韩国、新加坡等国家的政府和行业机构。
  访问期间,Fadi表示,ICANN非常关注中国互联网的高速发展,重视在中国的融入。CNNIC作为中国互联网行业的核心代表,ICANN非常希望与其在未来进行更加深入、更多层面的合作。
  近年来,随着中国对国际互联网事务参与程度的加深,为国际互联网领域贡献领先技术的意愿与能力的加强,中国在国际互联网社群的影响力与日俱增。李晓东透露,他还在推动和协调ICANN建立新的亚太战略,ICANN非常希望越来越多的像CNNIC这样的机构以及来自中国的专家个人积极参与并支持ICANN事务,加深合作,共同推动互联网事业的发展。
  ICANN负责包括域名、IP地址、协议参数等全球互联网核心资源的分配管理,是目前互联网管理治理领域最为核心的国际机构,但是我国目前ICANN事务的参与度仍然低于欧美发达国家,话语权不足。

  新浪科技讯 2月28日晚间消息,互联网名称与数字地址分配机构(ICANN)副总裁李晓东表示,ICANN计划在全球建立多个运营中心,将以美国为中心的总部职能向亚太以及欧洲、中东和非洲转移,另外将在多个国家设立代表处,其中北京将设立全球首个代表处。
  据悉,亚洲将是ICANN全球三大运营中心之一, ICANN将在北京设立全球首个代表处,并聘请本地雇员提高本地社群服务能力。李晓东介绍称,这充分说明了中国互联网在世界互联网舞台上扮演越来越重要的角色,日益成为全球互联网的重要组成部分。
  ICANN第46届会议将于4月7日至11日在北京举行,日前ICANN总裁兼首席执行官 Fadi Chehade一行访问了会议主要承办方中国互联网络信息中心(CNNIC)。此行为Fadi任职ICANN总裁兼首席执行官后访问亚洲的首站,ICANN还拜访了中国工业和信息化部、国家互联网信息办等单位,此行Fadi还将访问日本、韩国、新加坡等国家的政府和行业机构。
  访问期间,Fadi表示,ICANN非常关注中国互联网的高速发展,重视在中国的融入。CNNIC作为中国互联网行业的核心代表,ICANN非常希望与其在未来进行更加深入、更多层面的合作。
  近年来,随着中国对国际互联网事务参与程度的加深,为国际互联网领域贡献领先技术的意愿与能力的加强,中国在国际互联网社群的影响力与日俱增。李晓东透露,他还在推动和协调ICANN建立新的亚太战略,ICANN非常希望越来越多的像CNNIC这样的机构以及来自中国的专家个人积极参与并支持ICANN事务,加深合作,共同推动互联网事业的发展。
  ICANN负责包括域名、IP地址、协议参数等全球互联网核心资源的分配管理,是目前互联网管理治理领域最为核心的国际机构,但是我国目前ICANN事务的参与度仍然低于欧美发达国家,话语权不足。
  在谈到在ICANN任职届满后的打算时,李晓东表示,他在结束ICANN任职后将回到中国科学院继续工作,据CNNIC透露他将可能担任CNNIC重要岗位。加强中国互联网国际合作的参与度以及提升互联网管理治理研究水平将是其未来重点关注的工作之一。(伍德)

  组织实施了国家域名全球服务平台、灾备中心、监测分析平台等重要工程项目。组织完成了域名和电子邮件领域多项国际和国家技术标准,".中国"域名的申请和入根,中国首批域名服务全系列软硬件系统的研制等工作。

  新浪科技讯 2月28日晚间消息,互联网名称与数字地址分配机构(ICANN)副总裁李晓东表示,ICANN计划在全球建立多个运营中心,将以美国为中心的总部职能向亚太以及欧洲、中东和非洲转移,另外将在多个国家设立代表处,其中北京将设立全球首个代表处。
  据悉,亚洲将是ICANN全球三大运营中心之一, ICANN将在北京设立全球首个代表处,并聘请本地雇员提高本地社群服务能力。李晓东介绍称,这充分说明了中国互联网在世界互联网舞台上扮演越来越重要的角色,日益成为全球互联网的重要组成部分。

  今天下午,360公司以首次媒体开放日的形式对《每日经济新闻》不久前的报道《360黑匣子之谜:奇虎360"癌"性基因大揭秘》进行逐条回应。我以独立媒体人的身份入场(之所以强调这个是因为据说某些技术人员和《每经》的记者被拒绝入行了),记录下了对问题回应的要点。由于涉及的技术问题比较多,我会尽自己能力进行一些解读,但毕竟不是该行业的技术大牛,有理解偏了的也请海涵、指正。
  每日经济新闻的报道可以分为两大部分,一部分是对此前针对360产品安全、商业模式等方面的报道进行的引述、转载,另一部分是通过对技术人员和相关行业人士的采访,得到的调查结果、数据与结论。第一部分涉及面庞杂,时间跨度很大,有些问题360方面也曾以各种形式进行回应,因此现场发问的媒体人不多,我也没有花过多精力去再现。我们主要就每经报道中的新增信息量进行发问与再现。
  每经报道中首先提到的是360安全浏览器在用户无操作时也频繁与后台服务器通讯。报道原文如下:
  独立调查员为《每日经济新闻》记者进行了现场演示。他特意在自己的电脑上安装了360安全浏览器,并打开网络通信监视工具,这时可以看到,360安全浏览器在其电脑后台上就像一只工蜂,始终不停地忙碌着。
  然后,独立调查员又打开IE、腾讯、猎豹、chrome等浏览器,每一个浏览器都很安静,没有任何动作。
  "360安全浏览器在干嘛呢?谁也不知道。为什么要这样忙碌呢?作为浏览器,其作用就是可以显示网页服务器或者文件系统的HTML文件内容,并让用户与这些文件交互的一种软件。根据最小特权原则,你是没有理由在我的电脑里不停地'工作'。你要问他在做什么,他就说,是为了你的安全。"
  这段报道可以引出这样一个问题:360浏览器是否在用户没有操作时仍在后台上传了数据?如果有的话,这些数据是否包含了用户信息与隐私?
  360公司董事长周鸿祎在现场回应了这一问题。他表示,360浏览器是世界上首家以安全为主打概念的浏览器。为了将用户实时隔离于恶意网址之外,浏览器会每隔5分钟与服务器通讯一次,查询恶意网址库的更新,并将近期频繁出现的恶意网址库下载到用户机器上进行防护。这一操作并没有传递任何用户信息。
  但由于整个恶意网址库数量庞大(即互联网有史以来几乎所有的恶意网址)全部下载到用户电脑中并不现实,因此对打开了恶意网址云检查的用户来说,浏览器会上传用户访问的每个网址与云端恶意网址数据库比对。'金山、腾讯、卡巴斯基的类似产品也有这种功能设计'。周鸿祎解释称。
  对于上传的这部分网址数据,360会采用MD5加密后上传,以保护用户数据。有个别网站设计不规范,会把用户名和密码带在URL中,360对这种网址还会进行保护处理后上传。
  而对于这种'保护'的来历,也与每经报道中的一段历史有关。2010年底,黑客攻破了360的某台服务器,有大量数据被公布在互联网上。报道称,'此次泄密事件涉及总条数141万条,其中涉及用户名信息的条目有247326个,既包含用户名又包含密码条目有816个。'
  周鸿祎反驳称,这次被攻破的是360的恶意网址查询数据库,外泄信息是主要是浏览器上传的各种用户访问网址,并无涉及用户隐私的敏感信息。但他承认当时在技术上存在两个瑕疵:第一是当时浏览器以明文上传了用户网址;第二是有小部分网站由于设计不周,会将用户名与密码直接带在网址之中,这类网址被上传后,会造成'上传了用户名与密码'的误读。因此在后续产品设计中,针对这两点进行了功能完善与修补。
  而针对360安全卫士上传的数据问题,周鸿祎解释称,产品上传的信息只针对用户电脑中的可执行文件和模块的相关信息,因为木马、病毒均借由此类文件传播;不包括文档、照片等用户敏感信息。可执行文件一般不会包括用户敏感信息。而为了避免木马、病毒拦截这种查杀过程,上传的信息必须进行加密,这种必要的加密并不是媒体所说的'黑匣子'。
  每经报道中披露的第二个问题,是对360安全浏览器的'绿色网站认证'的质疑。报道原文如下:
  独立调查员进行了如下实验,以了解360绿色网站认证机制:
  在本机模拟,将招行网银域名劫持到IP为50.63.127.126(xliar.com)的网站,并在目标服务器上构建相应目录体系和登录页文件,然后使用360安全浏览器访问招行大众版登录页,从而进入伪装的招行网银页面。
  360网购保镖自动检测招行运行环境,几秒钟后完成检测,报告"本次检测未发现风险,现在可以放心网购了!"
  此时浏览器地址栏铭牌显示为"招商银行",点击后弹出"通过绿色网站认证",披着"招行网银"外衣的劫持网址,即被360认证为招行官方网站。
  而同样的操作,使用IE浏览器访问时,IE浏览器地址栏则会以非常显眼的方式告知用户"(网站数字)证书错误",点击错误信息可知,该网站证书不属于招商银行网站。
  ……
  而独立调查员演示的证据显示,360浏览器直接屏蔽认证机构VeriSign基于加密体系的可信认证,将其替换成了360绿色网站认证。
  上述报道可以简化为:360是否屏蔽了国际公认认证机构的网站证书,而将其替换为自己认证?绿色网站认证是否存在安全问题?
  周鸿祎完全否认了这一报道。他解释了360绿色网站认证的机制:该认证基于网站本身所具有的ICP证书等国家权威机构办法的许可证进行审查,与根据时间、服务器数据进行真实性认证的VeriSign完全平行,不会相互取代。这一绿色认证的目的是对电商网站进行可信度保障,其运行范围也与VerySign不同。
  由于每经报道中未披露采用了何种方式进行域名劫持,360浏览器高级总监现场向我们模拟了用修改hosts文件方式劫持域名后360浏览器的反应:将招商银行域名劫持后,访问这一域名时360浏览器会直接显示出网址被hosts重定向(见图)。

  每经报道中的第三个质疑,是360的V3升级计划。其报道原文如下:
  据《每日经济新闻》记者调查,一键优化,是通过360安全卫士,即通过客户端执行;"静默安装",则是直接通过云服务器发布指令执行的。而"V3升级"即是360产品线最重要的捆绑安装渠道。
  V3机制,最主要的推广"母体"是360安全卫士与360浏览器,而这两者间,又有分工与交叉,相互配合,其中的关系非常复杂。为遮人耳目,V3通道并不是常规的路径,而是在重要的"必须产品"推广中才会实施。通过这一路径,可以一下子将产品全面铺开,实现最大的安装量。而当360的主体产品拥有的用户基数越来越高的时候,这样的推广作用也变得更有成效。
  V3由360高层决策层下达指令,360安全数据中心启动,并通过后门机制,将指令性信息传达给用户电脑中安装的360安全卫士,主要指令为产品推广、删除竞争对手产品、新配置数据等;360安全卫士在用户Windows系统中,直接执行安装、更改、卸载;然后,通过后门机制,将信息反馈给360云安全数据中心,该中心再将信息收集、汇总统计后,上传给决策层。
  周鸿祎和其他现场的360技术高管披露了V3升级计划的细节。周鸿祎称,大量互联网软件公司均有连线升级软件的功能,V3也不过就是一个连线升级的操作模块,之所以叫V3,是因为这是该模块的第三个版本。这一模块实现的是软件个体的在线升级,而不会执行额外安装软件、卸载其他软件的功能。
  对于大量因安装了360安全卫士而安装了360浏览器的用户,周鸿祎解释,这不是V3自动为用户装上了浏览器,而是安全卫士在进行电脑体检后提示用户'是否需要安装安全浏览器',这个提示有些用户可能并没有注意到,直接点了同意,在安装后使他们产生'不知不觉被装了新软件'的错觉。周鸿祎反省说,以后对这类交叉推广,可以考虑是否要把提示做得再明显、再大一些。
  我对这个问题进行了追问,请周鸿祎明确回答,360软件是否曾经静默安装过关联软件,是否曾经未经许可删除过用户软件,他对这两个问题都明确回答'没有'。
  整个发布会除了上述内容外,还有周鸿祎对搜索市场的看法、股市的观点、苹果下架360应用的回应等等,但本文仅反映他对每经报道的回应,因此其他内容暂不记录。而对于他这些回应是否站得住脚,由于专业性过强,我也不能全部给出自己的判断,时间关系,先保证能不走样地记录、再现出来,供有关人士参考即可。有关360的产品安全性与一些操作的争议性,我会在以后有机会时进行专文探讨。

珠海市委常委会今日召开会议,批准给予"学酒哥"周少强党内警告处分,免去其格力集团党委书记、总裁、董事和珠海金融投资控股有限公司总经理职务。同时,在市国资委纪委调查中负有直接责任的调查组负责同志已被调离纪检监察队伍。
近日,经核查,周少强一顿晚餐酒水、菜品共计消费人民币37517元,其中消费红酒共12瓶,分别是2007年周伯通2瓶、2007年男爵庄园2瓶、2004年爱士图尔5瓶、1996年金钟1瓶、2000年威登1瓶、1998年木桐1瓶(没有网络上所讲的拉图、奥比昂两款红酒)。以上红酒消费按内部价计算(进货价+20%利润),共计人民币23706元。消费菜品、饮品共计人民币13811元。

  据《每日经济新闻》记者调查,一键优化,是通过360安全卫士,即通过客户端执行;"静默安装",则是直接通过云服务器发布指令执行的。而"V3升级"即是360产品线最重要的捆绑安装渠道。
  V3机制,最主要的推广"母体"是360安全卫士与360浏览器,而这两者间,又有分工与交叉,相互配合,其中的关系非常复杂。为遮人耳目,V3通道并不是常规的路径,而是在重要的"必须产品"推广中才会实施。通过这一路径,可以一下子将产品全面铺开,实现最大的安装量。而当360的主体产品拥有的用户基数越来越高的时候,这样的推广作用也变得更有成效。
  V3由360高层决策层下达指令,360安全数据中心启动,并通过后门机制,将指令性信息传达给用户电脑中安装的360安全卫士,主要指令为产品推广、删除竞争对手产品、新配置数据等;360安全卫士在用户Windows系统中,直接执行安装、更改、卸载;然后,通过后门机制,将信息反馈给360云安全数据中心,该中心再将信息收集、汇总统计后,上传给决策层。
  周鸿祎和其他现场的360技术高管披露了V3升级计划的细节。周鸿祎称,大量互联网软件公司均有连线升级软件的功能,V3也不过就是一个连线升级的操作模块,之所以叫V3,是因为这是该模块的第三个版本。这一模块实现的是软件个体的在线升级,而不会执行额外安装软件、卸载其他软件的功能。
  对于大量因安装了360安全卫士而安装了360浏览器的用户,周鸿祎解释,这不是V3自动为用户装上了浏览器,而是安全卫士在进行电脑体检后提示用户'是否需要安装安全浏览器',这个提示有些用户可能并没有注意到,直接点了同意,在安装后使他们产生'不知不觉被装了新软件'的错觉。周鸿祎反省说,以后对这类交叉推广,可以考虑是否要把提示做得再明显、再大一些。
  我对这个问题进行了追问,请周鸿祎明确回答,360软件是否曾经静默安装过关联软件,是否曾经未经许可删除过用户软件,他对这两个问题都明确回答'没有'。

  新浪科技讯 北京时间2月28日晚间消息,腾讯已与印度尼西亚最大的媒体集团PT Global Mediacom组建一家合资公司,以此进一步拓展印尼快速发展的社交媒体市场。
  该合资公司将进一步推广腾讯的微信服务。去年年底,腾讯已经在印尼市场推出了微信,将来还会推出更多产品。
  印尼拥有约2.4亿人口,是Facebook和Twitter的重要市场之一。腾讯总裁刘炽平在一份声明中称:"与MNC的合作是腾讯拓展印尼市场的战略性一步。"MNC是PT Media Nusantara Citra Tbk的简称,是PT Global Mediacom子公司。
  作为中国最大的投资基金之一,高瓴资本(Hillhouse Capital)也参与了此次合资。至于具体的资金规模,三方并未透露。
  PT Global Mediacom CEO哈里·塔诺索迪布(hary tanoesoedibjo)去年曾表示,他计划在印尼拓展社交媒体和网络游戏服务。(李明)

  导语:近来,众多Facebook用户纷纷取消对好友的关注,甚至是逃离这家社交网站。对此,美国科技博客GigaOM撰稿人马修·英格拉姆(Matthew Ingram)撰文指出,出现这种问题,虽然与用户使用Facebook的方式有关,但主要症结还在于Facebook的自身变化,如品牌广告出现的频率越来越高,与用户生活越来越不相关。

  用户纷纷吐槽
  一些已退出Facebook,或决定取消对Facebook上面所有好友关注的人,最近纷纷发帖"吐槽"这家网站的服务。我自己虽然没有这么极端,但最近也经历了一场我喜欢称之为"大取消(The Great Unfriending)"的运动:取消了对Facebook上面近80%好友的关注。
  这样一来,我使用Facebook的方式也改变了——我认为这种改变以及我觉得有必要这样做的原因,恰恰体现了Facebook当前面临的一些挑战。
  茱莉亚·安格温(Julia Angwin,媒体记者)说,她之所以取消对所有好友的关注,是因为Facebook"无法提供我所需要的隐私度。"与安格温不同的是,我在Facebook上面的确未遭遇任何隐私问题。
  安格温说,有一点最让她感到心烦:"当我与Facebook上面的某个群或朋友分享信息时,这些信息的最终流向往往会让我大吃一惊。"我尊重她的选择,但我在使用Facebook时,并没有遭受这样的问题困扰。
  无论好坏,我在注册Facebook、Twitter及几乎所有其他社交网站时,都经过了深思熟虑,决心要在合理的范围内,尽可能地开放信息,与别人分享几乎有关自己的一切事情。我从来没说过,所有人都应该这样做,人们不愿在网上分享信息的理由不胜枚举,比如担心孩子的隐私等,但我在很大程度上同意杰夫•贾维斯(Jeff Jarvis,纽约城市大学新闻学教授)的看法,即"信息公开"利大于弊。
  毁掉用户体验
  如果说隐私不是症结所在,那问题又在哪儿呢?简而言之,是信息过载(information overload)。以前,移动设备的实时连通性曾让我上了瘾,不可自拔,我发现Facebook同样具有这种特点,也是一种令人痛苦的体验。对这个问题想得越多,我越是认为,出现这种情况,我自己以及我使用Facebook的方式,都难辞其咎,还有一部分原因则是Facebook的改变所致。
  我欣赏和崇拜的一些人,包括风投公司Union Square Ventures创始人弗雷德•威尔逊(Fred Wilson),都纷纷取消对众多好友的关注,不再像以前那样痴迷于Facebook。究其原因,恐怕有不少人抱有这种想法:皮尤中心实施的最新调查表明,三分之二的用户在使用Facebook过程中会延长休息时间,还有近30%的用户计划减少使用Facebook的时间。
  我之所以认为自己也有问题,是因为自2006年我注册Facebook以来,我始终坚持最大程度地与别人分享信息,只要有人发来好友请求,我几乎来者不拒,即便他们其实并不是"朋友"。我当时很清楚,这样做肯定会有风险,但确实并未完全意识到风险究竟有多大,也不知道它最终会以何种方式毁掉我的体验。
  信息流杂乱无章
  正是抱着这种"有朋自远方来,不亦乐乎"的态度,我在Facebook上面的"好友"最终接近1000个:有些是我在开会时认识的,有些是通过其他人联系上的,还有些则是我的粉丝——即通过"订阅"我写的文章,关注了我的Facebook帐号。
  对于这些人——我已经全部取消了对他们的好友关注,我想说的是,他们都非常好,只是我无暇应对。我的信息流就好比一片汪洋,我对它们兴趣不大,或丝毫不感兴趣,只是偶尔看一看与我亲近之人的琐事信息。
  我认为,Facebook的失误之处在于,让用户的信息流变得杂乱无章,特别是"赞助内容"和"赞"出现的频率越来越高,例如,当"好友"称赞了可口可乐或福特汽车的品牌页面以后,就会出现更多这样的东西。就同我抱怨iPhone上面的信息推送一样,我们肯定也可以通过调整Facebook的设置,让这些东西不再显示。不过,谁会有时间来研究这些设置呢?我肯定是没有。
  细分市场竞争激烈
  在"大取消运动"之后,会发生什么事情呢?Facebook作为某一特定网络更有用,如让我看到亲朋好友正在做什么,包括那些与我们相隔千里的的亲朋好友。当然,我的几个女儿不包括在内,她们甚至已不再使用Facebook,更喜欢将全部时间花在Tumblr和Twitter上面。我想,这仅仅是让马克·扎克伯格(Mark Zuckerberg)感到担忧的事情之一。
  虽然Facebook对我而言更有用,但也只是用于特定目的,我不会在上面浪费太多时间。如果因为工作上的关系,必须与别人联系,那我会用LinkedIn;如果希望通过照片与别人建立联系,我会用Instagram或Flickr——这也是收购Instagram对Facebook而言实属明智之举的原因;如果想与不认识的人联系,我就用Twitter。如果身边越来越多的朋友使用Path,我也会通过它与亲朋好友联系,在这种情况下,我完全不需要Facebook了。
  Facebook目前仍在努力实现增长,证明其650亿美元的市值物有所值,在此过程中,它正面临着一系列挑战。但Facebook最大的挑战是——比向移动平台转型和通过广告创收这两个问题要大——不仅要保持与人们生活的相关性,还要向他们提供越来越多的产品或服务,保持用户的参与度。至少对我来说,Facebook正在失去先机——对别人而言,似乎也是如此。(清辰)
