为什么土星云层会形成六角形呢？无人能确定原因。这个六角形结构最早是在1980年代航海家号经过土星时所发现的，在那之前太阳系内从来没有发现过这样的系统。如果您认为土星南极的气旋不够怪的话，那么现在的这个土星北极肯定更诡异。上图中奇异的云层纹路是绕着土星运行的卡西尼号最近利用红外光波段所拍摄的。这张图像代表着从航海家观测之后，六角形结构稳定存在了至少20年。土星北极的影片显示出六角形云层的结构在土星旋转的时候也不会散掉。和地球上个别形成的六角形云不同，土星上的云层纹路有着六条明显等长的边界。这个六角形云层约有四个地球大。
