好奇号火星漫游车利用机械臂末端的钻头钻取了火星表面一块基岩的样品，这是首次通过钻探获取火星岩石样本。NASA称这是好奇号自去年八月抵达火星以来所取得的最大的具有里程碑意义的成就。今后几天内，地面控制人员将指示好奇号利用携带的科学设备分析样品，分析其矿物和化学成分，以确定火星上是否有水，是否在过去及现在有适合生命存在的环境。
