国际电信联盟（ITU）批准了新一代的视频格式H.265。H.265是H.264编解码器的继任者，设计在视频清晰度与H.264相等的情况下将比特率减少50％，让1080p高清流视频可以通过带宽有限的网络在手机和平板上点播。此外，H.265还支持4K/8K格式的视频，支持最高分辨率8192×4320。和H.264复杂的专利组合类似，H.265的专利持有者更多，专利授权可能变得更为复杂。
