圣诞节是为了庆祝耶稣降生，而根据圣经传说，耶稣之母是童贞女怀孕生子，是天降奇迹。但在动物王国，处女生子远远算不上奇迹，研究人员发现越来越多的物种不需要经过异性交配就能繁衍后代。这种现象被称为孤雌生殖。胚胎的发育通常需要来自精子和卵子的遗传物质，但在孤雌生殖物种中，卵细胞不经过减数分裂。这些后代一般都是雌性，是母亲的克隆体。最近几年发现的孤雌生殖物种有：新墨西哥鞭尾蝎；科摩多巨蜥(Komodo Dragon)；淡水水蚤；蛭形轮虫；窄头双髻鲨等。
