除了极少数昂贵的太空望远镜如哈勃，卫星并没有设计能被修复或能被补充燃料。它们被发射到轨道上，燃料耗尽或发生故障后就会被弃用。许多被弃用的卫星本身其实功能完好，但它们的命运已经注定，只能一圈圈的在轨道上运行，直到认为不会砸到人后才脱离轨道进入大气层，或者也可能会与其它卫星相撞产生大量碎片。如果它们能够重新服役？NASA正试图将这变为可能——用机器人为卫星补充额外的燃料，使其能重新投入使用。
