最原始的动物可能能在几乎不含有氧气的水中生长。这一发现暗示不是富含氧的海洋推动了动物的演化，而是动物的出现帮助创造了富含氧的海洋。海绵能在极低氧含量的水中生存。丹麦 Southern大学的Daniel Mills和同事从含氧水中收集了海绵Halichondria panicea，然后逐步减少其生活环境的氧含量。在氧含量只有大气氧含量，海绵仍然能够长时间生存。如果现代的海绵都能忍受低氧环境，那么远古的原始动物可能也能如此。许多研究人员仍旧相信，只有在氧含量比较高的时候动物才会出现，但这项研究挑战了这一看法。研究报告发表在PNAS上。
