人类的大脑大约有一千亿个神经元，每个神经元都有不同的功能，其中一个功能是识别脸，将一个人的外表与其对应起来。这种脸部识别能力能保存数年时间，即便大脑一直持续的改变神经元的连接线路。美国国家卫生研究院的一组研究人员，使用功能性核磁共振成像记录猕猴观看脸部图像的大脑活动，定位了脸部识别神经元所在的大脑区域。他们发现，特定面孔的神经元以相同的方式对相同的面孔作出反应，不论是间隔几天还是间隔几年。研究暗示，大脑神经连线的重组对神经元的面部识别几乎不构成影响。
