官方媒体引用中国工程院的一名铁路专家的话称，中国考虑建造穿越西伯利亚，白令海峡，阿拉斯加、加拿大，连接美国的高速铁路。但这个宏伟工程是空中楼阁还是会真正实现，目前来说还是未知之数。提议中的高铁始于中国东北，一路上经过西伯利亚和白令海峡，使用海底隧道穿过太平洋，抵达阿拉斯加，然后再穿过加拿大，最终到达目的地美国。海底隧道约长200公里，高铁线路的总长度长达1.3万公里，将由中国资助和建造。除了提议者外，还没有其他中国铁路专家支持该项目。
